Silver Criteria

  • Silver is the third main level of the Twilight Trick Titles. Only Silver tricks are accepted for this level but Copper, Bronze and Gold tricks may be submitted at the same time.

  • Your dog must achieve Bronze Starlight (Level 1) or Bronze Stardust (Puppy/Elderly Level) before any Silver titles can be awarded. Before moving onto Gold, your dog must be awarded Silver Starlight or Silver Stardust (where applicable).

  • For silver, we want to see as little luring as possible. Ideally, we would like to see your dog thinking for themselves and independently performing the tricks where possible instead of following a food/toy lure. Any videos using lures heavily will be under our discretion as to whether they will be accepted.

General Trick Criteria

General

Delays are accepted but tricks should be completed in a sensible timeframe and without constantly repeated cues,  i.e. cuing “Paw” twice is okay but cuing “Paw, paw, come on, paw, can you give paw?” is not. All tricks must be cued. Any audio or visual cues must be visible or audible in any submissions.

Puppies

Any tricks involving jumping or impact on joints, such as begging, should not be performed with puppies under 12 months old. Please contact us for an accommodation if required.

Handler Criteria

No physical manipulation is allowed, such as moving the dog into position unless the criteria specifically calls for it. Dogs may be on leash in outdoor or public areas but the leash should not be used to manipulate or move the dog. Handler’s hands should be in view of the video wherever possible.

Rewards and Praise

Rewards and praise are both accepted and encouraged, but if the reward is in your hand whilst cueing, it is classed as a lured trick.

Body Language

While some frustration is natural in the training process, we want to see you and your dog having fun! This means that videos showing excessive stress will be refused. Everyone moves at their own pace so please don’t rush.

Time Limits

There are no time limits on submissions, aside from the age restrictions in place on the Stardust level for seniors and puppies.

Feedback

Where appropriate, your assessor may provide feedback if a video is refused. We always aim to provide constructive feedback, but any rudeness or aggression toward our team or mods may result in a suspension or ban if this happens repeatedly. If you would prefer a different assessor, please ask.

Aversive Tools

For all Twilight titles, we expect your dog to be handled using only a flat collar or a back clip harness while completing the titles. Other items like coats, vests and the like which do not affect handling are allowed. Any videos showing an E-Collar, vibration collar, headcollar, prong collar, or a bandana or snood which may be hiding any of these aids will be subject to re-submission. This also applies to videos showing leash corrections or excessive force.

Public Videos

At the start of any videos recorded in a public space, please ensure you show that your dog is being handled using ONLY a flat collar or back clip harness at the start of the video. Any videos which do not show a lack of aversive tools will need to be resubmitted.

Other Criteria

Finding treats - please do not use transparent cups or anything breakable.

Loose leash - the leash has to be slack, to show that the dog isn't pulling, or that you aren't directing the dog via the leash. We expect to see full-length leads for this, no traffic leads.

Find the car - please ensure your dog does not jump up or damage other cars when performing this trick. Please submit find the car videos via private messenger or email, so people's REG number plates aren't being posted online.

Find the house - please ensure that all road safety measures are taken when training and filming around roads. Your dog should be on-leash if roads are present, but the leash should be slack enough to show your dog is leading rather than being led.

Paw pods - handler should not physically lift the feet or move the dog, or hold the lure and keep it there until the dog does it right.

Muzzles

Ensure any equipment you are using is appropriate and safe.

Two cues total accepted - one for opening and one for closing.

This should be a controlled opening without unnecessary roughness or any damage caused to the item.

Out-of-Reach Retrieve (Silver)

An item is placed out of the dog’s reach on a higher surface and the dog must step on two separate levels to reach it, such as stepping on a stool, then onto the counter, then reaching up to a shelf to retrieve the item. Dog then safely gets back down and takes the item to the handler's hand.

Out-of-Sight Retrieve

Handler to cue an item retrieval ("get me my blue bag”), dog leaves room and retrieves item to hand OR dog searches for hidden item within the same room and retrieves to hand. Other things you could use instead of a shopping cart could be a manual wheelchair, a walker or a child's toy on wheels.

Rainbow Cues (Silver)

Using 2 different coloured cue cards containing a different cue for each colour, the dog is to perform each behaviour linked to the corresponding card when shown. 3 repetitions needed with shuffled orders.

If you achieve Silver Rainbow Cues, these tricks (i.e., sit, lay down) cannot be reused for Gold Rainbow Cues

Dog must indicate via a paw/wave or nose touch/nudge, and they must choose the right cup on the first try. Two repetitions required, with the order of the cups being shuffled each time. Please do not use transparent cups or anything breakable for this trick.

Send to Go Around

Rewards can be given periodically but dog should not be bribed or lured. The dog can adjust position but shouldn't break (stand up or move away).

Shopping Assistant (Silver)

Presented with an item, the dog should carry it to a bag at least 2 body lengths away, place it in the bag, and carry the bag back to the handler.

Silent Communication

Silent communication is a free space to show off a trick your dog knows which isn't cued via a classic hand signal or your voice. When the handler gives the unspoken cue, the dog should automatically perform the trick. Please tell us at the start of the video which trick your dog will perform and what your cue will be. This can be any trick, APART FROM a sit/down/stand. This could be:

- Showing a cue card

- Playing a sound on your phone

- Showing them an item

- Performing a behaviour

Examples:

- Handler picks up coat, so dog goes and retrieves their lead

- Handler scratches arm, so dog retrieves a fidget toy

Dog must spin then immediately jump into handler's arms. This must all be completed on one cue. Handler can be sitting or standing.

Sports Freespace

Show off your sports dogs! Including joring, gundog work, mushing, cani-cross - show us your dog’s skills!

This does not need to be a competitive sport video, but the video should replicate a dog sport even if this is filmed in your free time.

Please ensure you are using equipment appropriate to the sport and the size/age/health of your dog.

Stacking Cups (Silver)

3 cups or bowls (or something else suitable) are place in a randomised order. Dog must stack them.

Stand With Chin Target

With a surface in front of the dog (examples below), the dog rests their head on the surface whilst their body stays in a standing position. The dog should not move for at least 5 seconds. Try and find something that matches your dog's height.

Examples: a low stool, a table, a chair, a toolbox.

Stay (Silver)

Dog to hold a 2-minute stay whilst the handler or other people provide distractions. This could be bouncing a ball, dancing, children playing – whatever your dog finds the most tempting. Dog may be leashed but leash should not be held.

Stepping Stones

Dog steps on 5 stones placed at least 3/4 (three quarters) of dog’s body length apart. Dog steps onto each stone without touching the ground around the stones. Hula hoops can also be used for larger dogs. Stones should not be much larger than the dog’s body length across.

Target 2 Marks

On a single cue, dog places their front and back feet on two separate marks. These can be flat or raised (for example, a flat board for front paws, and a wobble board for back paws). No set distance required.

Target Placement (Silver)

Using a flat target up to the size of an A4 piece of paper, the dog takes an item and places it on the target. The dog should start at least two body lengths from the target. The item should be at least three quarters of the size of the target.

Examples: A flannel, a piece of card, a flattened cardboard box, a piece of paper

Tech Tails (Silver)

With the dog out of the room, handler hides a phone underneath an item, in a box, down the back of the sofa cushions, or in an otherwise difficult to find location. Once dog is called back into the room, they should search and find the phone before retrieving it to hand. The search has no time limit. Repeat twice with different hiding places each time.

Tidy Up (Silver)

Opening a box, the dog places 3 toys into the box and closes the lid behind themselves. If the box has no lid, the dog pulls or lifts something across the top to close it.

Tight Spin

In a space only just wide enough for the dog to stand and turn, they spin a tight circle.

Tiptoes

Dog stands between handler’s legs with their front paws on handler’s feet. The duo walk for at least 6 steps.

Tooth Target

Using any kind of object, the dog performs a controlled (i.e. not biting and yanking) tooth target. No duration needed.

Touch Game (Silver)

Set up a platform next to a higher platform. Put any item on the higher platform and ask your dog to touch it. The dog should then go onto the lower platform, and lean to touch the item on the higher platform.

Examples: putting your phone on the desk, and your dog hopping up onto the chair to lean and touch the phone. Or having an item just out of reach and having the dog stand on a wobble board to lean up and touch it.

Touch Game (Silver Plus)

Using at least 5 different post-it notes (or similar sized cards and tape) placed at various heights and at least one body length from each other. The handler cues the dog to touch 3 individual post-its in a randomised order.

Once cue per post-it note. We are looking for an obviously intentional, full contact nose touch without any duration needed.

Tracking (Silver)

A person hides while out of sight of the dog (ie with the dog indoors while the person gets situated) in an outdoor space requiring at least 2 minutes of walking, two left or right turns and, if relevant, diverting from the main path to find them. With the dog on leash, the handler takes the dog to the general area and cues a "Find" or similar. The dog should find the person within five minutes. The dog should not be given verbal directions, nor should the person in hiding call to the dog.

Trash Panda (Silver)

Using a lidded bin, the dog opens the bin by any means and places two items inside it before closing the bin. The items should be at least 1 body length from the bin.

Tricks in Motion (Silver)

Both the handler and dog move together, with the dog moving at a brisk walk or trot, with no set distance required. The dog is to perform at least 2 Silver and 3 Bronze tricks (if you submitted for Bronze Tricks in Motion, please do not reuse the same tricks) in the following sequence:

Movement - Trick - Movement - Trick - Movement - Trick - Movement - Trick - Movement - Trick

The dog should maintain a loose leash walk with no pulling at all, but does not need to be in a heel.

Speed adjustments can be made for canine or human disabilities - please enquire before filming.

Triple Orbit

Dog orbits handler forwards three times (maximum two cues).

Trust Trost

Using their chin, a dog rests their head on another dog's back. Both dogs hold the position for 3+ seconds.

Tuck

Using a small space just larger than your dog when they are laid down, the dog tucks into the space and holds a stay for 1 minute.

Examples: under a table, on a train, under a seat, under a bench.

Ideally this would be performed in public, but accommodations can be made if required.

Tug On Cue (Silver)

Presented with an item which is NOT a tug toy(see examples), the dog waits with the item within reach without snapping or lunging for it. When cued, the dog performs a controlled tug for at least 15 seconds before Dropping It on cue.

Two Combined Tricks (Silver)

Dog performs 2 silver tricks at the same time. Tricks performed one after the other (ie a chase your tail, then close a drawer) do not count.

Examples: performing a watch my six whilst performing a who’s your best friend, or performing a say your prayers whilst performing a purse puppy.

Two-Dog Catwalk

Two dogs walk with crossed paws for 6 steps minimum.

Under the Bridge (Silver)

With handler’s legs or arms held like a bridge, the dog crawls underneath them and out the other side.

Unstable Object Target (Silver)

When presented with two unstable objects (i.e., wobble boards, soft pillows, yoga balls), the dog puts their front feet onto target #1 and their back paws onto target #2. The dog holds this position for 10 seconds with no assistance from handler.

Unwind Rope

Dog unwinds at least 1m of wound rope independently, without any assistance from handler. This can be through any method, but behaviour must be intentional (i.e. no just tugging the string, or walking off with it whilst it unravels).

The handler can hold the item for the dog to unwind, but cannot help with the actual unwinding process.

Examples: rope, ribbon, a ball of string.

Unzip a Zipper

Dog fully unzips a coat (worn by the handler) or a bag.

Vogue

Using a box or similar object, the dog rests their front paws on the box and then rests their head on their paws OR tilts their head and holds either position for 5+ seconds, as if having a photoshoot.

Volley (Silver)

Handler throws a balloon to the dog. The dog then volleys the balloon back to the handler using their head or nose.

Walk Forwards (Silver)

Dog must start next to the handler, then the handler cues them to move forward. The dog must walk in a straight line for at least 3 body lengths away from the handler. Dog must continue walking for the 3 body lengths without stopping, going off track or sniffing anything.

Walking Leg Weaves

As handler walks, the dog weaves between their legs. 3 fluent figure 8 repetitions required.

Walk Tidy

Dog is passed their leash, a roll of poo bags or a packet of treats and a coat or harness to put away on a shelf or table at least 6 body lengths away.

The items must stay on the surface and not fall.

Watch My Six

Dog spins into a middle, facing away from the handler.

Wear a Hat

Dog to put on hat without help using whatever method is preferred.

Which Tin? (Silver)

Offer the dog 5 tins, only 2 of which hold two different scents (i.e. orange and gun oil). Dog must differentiate between both scents and detect the one cued. Repeat twice.

Who's Your Best Friend? (Silver)

Dog wraps front legs around a teddy, inanimate object or handler’s leg and holds for at least 3 seconds.

Wipe Your Paws

Dog wipes their paws in a circular or digging motion on a doormat or rug.
